According to Alpena Fire Chief Bill Forbush many of those things are promoted during National Fire Prevention Week which runs until the end of the week.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo says "Fire Prevention Week is a wonderful time for the young, old, and everyone in between to learn important tips and bring awareness to the importance of fire safety".

National Fire Prevention Week began this past Sunday with its new theme "Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!"

"We always suggest you check your smoke detectors twice a year", Hovind says.

They also plan a "burn room" demonstration at 1:45 p.m.

Over the last five years, in 36 per cent of fatal home fires, there was no smoke alarm warning (in 18% there was no smoke alarm and in 18% the smoke alarm did not operate). As the old saying goes, practice makes ideal, and the more times that kids practice how to get out, the easier it will be for them if an actual fire occurs in your home. Go to neighboring residences and call emergency services, and most importantly, never go back inside a burning building.

"We've responded to fires where the smoke alarms either didn't work or the house didn't have any at all", said Nugent.

It is the law in Ontario that homes must have working smoke alarms installed on every storey and near sleeping areas.

The NFPA recommends that parents teach children how to escape on their own, to close doors while escaping to slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire.

People who have homes with more than one floor are encouraged to have fire ladders for the rooms upstairs. Reliable, properly placed smoke detectors are vital to keeping your family safe.
