Bangladesh PM says government will continue to help Rohingya

In the southern parts of Bangladesh they have joined hundreds of thousands of Rohingya who were already living in miserable conditions in tightly packed camps.

Thousands of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar fled to Bangladesh on Monday in a new surge of refugees driven by fears of starvation and violence the United Nations has denounced as ethnic cleansing.

Violence erupted in Myanmar's Rakhine state on August 25 when the country's security forces launched an operation against the Rohingya Muslim community.

Dhaka: Bangladesh Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali on Tuesday said a total of 3,000 Rohingya Muslims were killed since August 25, following the army operation in the Rakhine State of Myanmar.

In a village called Oolaphay many homes were destroyed near the security posts, Rakhine mobs accompanied by the military burned them in Maungdaw three days ago.

The European Union will cut back contacts with Myanmar's top generals in a first step to increase sanctions over an army offensive that has driven more than 500,000 Rohingya Muslims out of the country, according to a draft document seen by Reuters.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Tuesday launched a oral cholera vaccination campaign at camps inhabited by the Rohingyas in Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar to protect the community members from the infection. In 1982, a controversial law stripped citizenship from the Rohingya, officially making them stateless.

The Nobel laureate has come under sharp global censure for failing to voice more sympathy for the Rohingya streaming out of her country.

The Anjumanpara crossing is a narrow point in the river, with no barbwire fence along some sections of the frontier, but it involves a perilous water crossing and walking through miles of paddy fields to enter Bangladesh.
